In filmmaking, home is anywhere something interesting is being captured or being released. That said, instead of a homepage, we’re giving you a behind the scenes page.
Why the name Happenschist?
The short answer: schist happens.
The long answer?
Schist is about layers. Any good story has layers, and forms over time. We’re Colorado based. Take a look around, there are rocks everywhere. I’m sure there was some sort of subliminal programming at play, the environment itself getting in on some human creativity!
What projects are underway?
We’re working exclusively on a film that takes place mostly in Colorado, a lot of it in the mountains. Some of it will be filmed in Greece. The working title is “The Graces.” Filming commenced at the end of January. We’re taking a swing at Sundance 2027. If that doesn’t pan out, it’s going Telluride and Crested Butte.
Can you tell us anything about “The Graces?”
A quiet guy who by day works at a small Colorado brewery decides to crack out of his shell by climbing a local fourteener — and in doing so is drawn into the ancient world. There’s a burning-bush moment, but no commandments, no rules handed down — just an ordinary person whose effort, friendships, and persistence take on mythic proportions. As the climb and the surrounding events test his sanity and resolve, what begins as a personal challenge becomes an encounter with grace as it was before it was named. At heart, it’s a story of an unintentional awakening of ancient forces, carried out in the modern world, far from the clouds of Mt. Olympus.
How do we stay informed as the project progresses? Will we see you at Sundance 2027 in Boulder?

We’ve got something planned for Sundance 2027, besides submitting the film. Too soon to share the details, but following us on Instagram is a good way to get in on what’s to come with Happenschist Films in Boulder next year!
